An Art Print (measures 27 1/4" x 42 1/4" [69 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) Groucho Marx (born Julius Henry Marx) was a legendary comedian/actor from the 1920s to the 1960s. He and his three brothers started on the stage (Groucho, Gummo, Harpo, and Chico). Youngest brother Zeppo joined, so for a brief time there were five Marx Brothers, but Gummo soon left the act to join the army. The remaining four performed on stage and signed with Paramount Pictures and made a number of memorable movies there. Zeppo then left the act, and the remaining three signed with MGM, where they had two of their best remembered movies: A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races. In the 1950s, the brothers separated, and Groucho had a very memorable TV game show called "You Bet Your Life". In his later years, he was a frequent guest on TV talk shows. Groucho passed away in 1977 at the age of 86. To learn much more about him, read the fine biography "Raised Eyebrows" by Steve Stoliar (available as an audio book narrated by Mr. Stoliar, who was Groucho's secretary and lived with him for a number of years). Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by Groucho Marx and hand-numbered 25/250! There is an interesting story behind this poster. In 1976, celebrity photographer (and major poster collector) Steve Schapiro had the idea of doing two limited edition full size art prints of two of the Marx Bros. best one-sheets, The Cocoanuts and Duck Soup. He contacted Groucho Marx (who he had been friends with for years) and set up to have Groucho sign 250 of each, which would be also hand numbered. But Groucho was in ailing health (he would pass away the following year), and only some of the 250 of each poster that were printed were eventually signed by Groucho, and the remainder were unsigned and also unnumbered. No one seems to know exactly how many of each were eventually signed, but the number is surely less than 250 of each. This print was obtained directly from Steve Schapiro, so we are 100% certain the autograph is authentic, but it does not come with a certificate of authenticity. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: good to very good. The poster was in a frame for many years, and it has horizontal "waves" scattered throughout. The waves are much more seen from the back of the poster than from the front. Any talented restorer could "press and flatten" the poster without backing it, and afterwards, it will be in perfect condition, and it will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall.
