A 1951 Re-Copied Movie Script (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm], 147 pages; see below) (Learn More) The Merry Widow, the 1934 Ernst Lubitsch romantic musical comedy ("The world's greatest spectacle of music, love and laughter!"; written by Samson Raphaelson; based on book and lyrics by Victor Leon & Leo Stein and music by Franz Lehar, from his 1905 operetta; about a mythical tiny country in Europe, and their richest citizen, a widow, goes to Paris, and the king of the country is afraid she will never come back, so he sends the country's greatest lover to try to marry her and keep her in their country!) starring Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Edward Everett Horton, Sterling Holloway, Una Merkel, George Barbier, and Minna Gombell. Note that there was a 1925 silent version of this musical (a neat trick!) directed by Erich Von Stroheim, and a 1952 version starring Fernando Lamas and a non-singing Lana Turner (whose singing voice was dubbed)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this script is a 1951 re-copy of the March 24, 1934 script written by Ernest Vajda & Samson Raphaelson. It surely was re-copied in 1951 because MGM was planning on re-making it, and they wanted the new screenwriters to use the original screenplay as a reference (and in fact, the movie was remade in 1952, starring Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas). Please do not bid on this script thinking it is from 1934, because it is a studio re-copied version from 1951. Note that this item comes from the estate of Paul Kohner, who as an agent for hundreds of actors, writers, directors, etc., was constantly sent scripts to "pitch" to his clients or to the studios, and therefore we are 100% certain that this is an original script created at the time it was written. Kohner had a remarkable life! Kohner was born in Czechoslovakia in 1902, and he was a journalist working at his father's newspaper. He came to Hollywood after interviewing Carl Laemmle, who gave him a job as a publicity man. He became the head of Universal's European department in Berlin, and returned to the U.S. in the early 1930s, and left Universal in 1938, becoming a publicity agent. Among his clients were some of the greatest film stars ever, including Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, and also great directors such as John Huston and Billy Wilder. He had close personal friendships with many of his clients, and he saved every bit of correspondence and paper work from his agency! He was married to actress Lupita Tovar from 1932 until his death in 1988. Amazingly, after his death, few institutions showed interest in his immense files, and only a small amount ended up being saved, with a lot literally thrown away! Our consignor purchased the item offered here from Mr. Kohner's estate in 1989, and he has held it until now, when he has consigned several items from Mr. Kohner's estate to eMoviePoster.com, and each item is being auctioned separately.
