(Learn More) The Green Pastures, the 1936 Marc Connelly & William Keighley black African American religious fantasy melodrama (depicting a "black heaven", where only black people went after death, as apparently discrimination in 1936 did not end even at the grave; the movie must be seen to be believed!) starring Rex Ingram (as Adam, De Lawd, and Hezdrel), Oscar Polk (as Gabriel), Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson ( as Noah), Myrtle Anderson (as Eve), Al Stokes (as Cain), and Edna Mae Harris (as Zeba) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this pressbook, and that example had cuts, while this one is complete and uncut! Also note that this very large pressbook was folded across the middle at one time, but it has been laying flat for a long time. Because it is fragile, we would much prefer to not fold it for shipping, which means it will need to be sent in a very large flat package that will measure approximately 19" x 24" (unless the new owner insists, and it willing to take responsibility for any damage that folding it causes). Also note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This pressbook contains the original herald that was included with it, and it is pictured next to the pressbook below. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle many years ago, but it has been laying flat for many years. It has a small brown stain on the cover at the bottom of the "T" of "THE". There is a 4" vertical scratch in the center of the cover. It has the full-color herald, which is not tipped-in, but which is loose within the pressbook. There is some wear around the edges of the covers and less so on the interior pages. The final interior page was diagonally creased in the top right during trimming, so there is now slight excess border there, but it could simply be trimmed by the new owner. Overall, the pressbook has survived in about as nice condition as one could hope. Learn More about condition grades
