An Original Vintage German Campaign Book (measures 7" x 8 1/4" [18 x 21 cm]; 124 pages) (Learn More) UFA 1933-34, the 1933 German campaign book featuring images and information about UFA films and stars. UFA of course was the gigantic German film company which distributed all over the world, in the 1920s in conjunction with Paramount Pictures in the U.S. In the 1920s, they issued incredibly elaborate campaign books, filled with color ads for all their movies, and these were even more elaborate than those of the U.S. studios at that time. The latest such book we have seen was from 1927/28. We have not seen any from between that year and the one from this year. THIS book is completely different from those earlier ones! It was made when Hitler and the Nazi party rose to power in Germany, and perhaps that uncertainty in Germany at that time influenced how this book was created. It measures 7" x 8 1/4", and it has a cloth binding that has a button snap on one side. It opens and has two pockets, which contain 31 six-page booklets (the covers and four interior pages). A few of the booklets explain what is happening in UFA at this time (in German, of course), but most of the booklets are each for specific movies. Three of the most interesting movies are Gold (with Brigitte Helm), Victor/Victoria (the first German version), and Inge und de millionen (also with Brigitte Helm). There is a booklet for "Hitlerjunge Quex: Ein Film vom Opfergeist der deutschen Jugend" (Our Flags Lead Us Forward), a Nazi propaganda film about the Hitler Youth, and it has a flag with a swastika on the cover, so it is clear that UFA was trying to both appease Hitler and collaborate with him, which might have been the only way they could survive. This book is surely incredibly rare! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 12. Condition: very good to fine. There is minor smudging on the covers and slightly on a few of the booklets, but otherwise, they are in really excellent condition.
