An Original 1938 (from the first release of this movie in Italy) Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 38 1/4" [69 x 97 cm]) (Learn More)

Madame Bovary, the 1937 Gerhard Lamprecht German romantic adultery melodrama (based on the novel by Gustave Flaubert) starring Pola Negri (in the title role as Emma Bovary; this Polish born actress had been a major star in the 1920s, but when her career began winding down in the late 1930s, she went to Europe and made this movie, plus four others, before basically retiring), Aribert Wascher, Ferdinand Marian, Werner Scharf, and Alexander Engel. Note that there was a French movie based on this same novel in 1934, but there was no U.S. version until 1949, when it was remade with Jennifer Jones in the title role.

Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare Italian poster from just before World War II (see below for why). Not only that, but it is the only poster from this movie we have ever auctioned, except for a German poster, which we auctioned 27 years ago! Virtually no Italian posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II (mostly only some heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in Italy during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards! Note also that this Italian one-sheet measures 27" x 38 1/4" [69 x 97 cm]. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: good. The poster is somewhat fragile. It has small separation and tiny paper loss at the middle crossfold and tiny paper loss at the top crossfold. It has pinholes, smudges, and stains around the edges, with small paper loss in parts of the blank borders, and small paper loss in the "E" of "NEGRI" at middle left. It has some smudges and faint stains in the image, including some in Negri's face. After a relatively simple linenbacking by a top professional, the poster will look great, and it likely won't need much paint restoration within the image.
