A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 49 1/2" x 72" [126 x 183 cm]) (Learn More)

La Creation de L'Homme (literally translates to "The Creation of Man"), the 1887 French advertising poster (with taglines that translates to "Popular Scientific Library published under the direction of Camille Flammarion, The Creation of Man and the First Ages of Humanity. Splendid engravings, large plates, printed separately by Henri du Cleuziou") promoting the purchase of a book by French astronomer and author, Camille Flammarion. The poster features great art by Leon Chouquet showing prehistoric giant cats (like saber tooth tigers) attacking primitive cavemen. We would think the setting is in Africa, but we could find no further information about this poster or the book it was promoting. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Artist: Leon Chouquet
Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster, which we have never auctioned before! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had creases, tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of many folds. It had tears and areas of paper loss around the edges and many creases and scuffs scattered throughout the poster, as well as some small stains. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
