A Linenbacked French Travel Poster (measures 46 1/2" x 63" [118 x 160 cm]) (Learn More) Cachat's Majestic, the circa 1910s French travel poster encouraging people to visit the Cachat's Majestic resort hotel which was located in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France (near the junction of France, Switzerland and Italy). Note that this poster features Candido Aragonese de Faria artwork of people enjoying various activities at the hotel, and we have auctioned two versions, one showing people playing tennis by the resort in the summer, and the other showing people skiing and sledding by the resort in the winter. Artist: Candido Aragonese de Faria Important Added Info: Note that we have only once before auctioned this French travel poster. The person who purchased it felt that we did not completely describe the degree to which it is faded, so he returned it, and we are auctioning it now, with a better condition description, but it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned (we did auction a different poster for this resort that was for "summer", while this one is for "winter"). We are guessing that both posters are from the 1910s, and they would seem to surely be at least that old, but they could even be older. If anyone knows more about either, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster was never folded. It has both darkened somewhat and faded somewhat. It had some creases and small tears in small parts, with some scuffs and smudges scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Obviously, one would prefer to find an example of this poster in better condition, but we don't know that one exists! Also, it will be the choice of the new owner whether to leave this ultra rare poster as it is, or to have restoration performed, either with or without re-backing the poster. What ever they decide, they will have a really cool and ultra rare poster to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
