An Original Vintage One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh) (Learn More) The Gay Nighties, the 1933 Mark Sandrich hotel comedy short ("Broadway's monarchs of mirth!"; about the going-ons at a hotel during a political convention) starring Bobby Clark and Paul McCullough (the comedy team, Clark and McCullough), James Finlayson, Dorothy Granger, and John Sheehan. Note that the title was a parody on the name of the decade from 1890 to 1899 called "The Gay Nineties", and it was surprisingly naughty, but this was a pre-Code short! Also note that this was one of 22 comedy shorts that Clark & McCullough made for RKO (they had been a vaudeville comedy team, starting in 1912, and appeared on Broadway with Irving Berlin before making movies). Sadly, after making their RKO shorts, McCullough became depressed and a couple of years later committed suicide, and Clark retired from the movies, returning to Broadway, and died in 1960, at the age of 71.
