An Original 1949 (from the first release of this movie in Spain) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Spanish Movie Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 39 1/4" [70 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Passage to Marseille, the 1944 Michael Curtiz France World War II (WWII) military prisoners-fighting-Nazis Devil's Island action melodrama (this is the extremely convoluted movie about French convicts escaping from Devil's Island to fight for Free France in World War II, with flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks; "From a Novel by Charles Nordhoff & James Norman Hall", the authors of "Mutiny on the Bounty") starring Humphrey Bogart, Claude Rains, Michele Morgan, Philip Dorn, Sydney Greenstreet, Helmut Dantine, Peter Lorre, and George Tobias NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ramon Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Spanish poster, which has completely different art by Ramon! The poster was printed with a logo for Astoria Films in the top left corner. Someone overprinted that portion of the poster with solid black, and some of the overprinting extends into the right of Rains' image. We are not sure why this was done, but we have had Spanish heralds for this movie that have the same overprinting, and some have "Selecciones Capitolio" printed over the black. It seems likely that there was a change of distributors at the last minute, and that was why the overprinting occurred. We searched the Internet and found two other examples of this poster that have been auctioned, and both those had the same overprinting, and they were described as being from the first Spanish release, so we think that is very likely correct, and that the overprinting occurred before the first release. The poster has overprinting in the top left corner (see above). It also had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some creases and tiny tears on parts of the folds, and a few tiny tears and pinholes in the borders. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking (it is hard to know how to judge the overprinting, if it is on all examples of this poster). The poster was pretty well backed, but, of course, the overprinting is still there, so bear that in mind before bidding. Learn More about condition grades
