A Set of 2 Special Theatrical Hanging Mobiles (measures 21 1/2" x 21 3/4" [55 x 55 cm]) (Learn More) Follow the Fleet, the classic 1936 Mark Sandrich military Navy sailor romantic musical ("Clear the decks for action!..."; "They're the life of the Navy... in the musical gem of the ocean!"; "Irving Berlin composed the salty songs and tantalizing tunes"; "A 21-gun salute to the mirth of a nation! ...with more new dances... more new songs... more new things to make you laugh and thrill and tingle than you've ever seen or heard before!"; "In the Super-Dreadnaught of musical shows"; "Strike up the band!... Here come the king and queen rhythm... in the super-dread-naught of musical shows!"; "Based on the play 'Shore Leave' by Hubert Osborne"; "Lyrics and music by Irving Berlin who gives you a broadside of Song Hits"; about two sailors on leave in San Francisco and they are romancing two pretty performers) starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Randolph Scott, Betty Grable, Harriet Hilliard (billed as "Harriet Nelson"), Astrid Allwyn, Lucille Ball, "and scores of glorious girls and go-get 'em gobs hitting the high spots afloat and ashore!". Note that this was one of the nine wonderful movies that Astaire and Rogers made between 1933 and 1939 (they made one final movie, "The Barkleys of Broadway", thirteen years later in 1949). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that studios made unusual three-dimensional promotional items starting in the 1910s for almost every movie, but more for the major releases. These would be items like "tire covers" (which fit over a spare tire on the back of a car), mobiles, door hangers, etc. Hardly any of them survive, and the few that do are often in dreadful condition, because three-dimensional items don't store well, and often get damaged over the years. What is offered here is one of the coolest such items that we have ever seen! It is a set of two hanging mobiles in the shape of life preservers, and they have real rope tied around the edges, and patriotic ribbon across the top! They were created for this movie, one for each star, and they were likely ordered by only larger theaters, and we highly doubt that another example of these survives. They were discovered in 1997, and were consigned to Bruce Hershenson for his major auction held that year. They sold for $1,725, and the person who bought them in 1997 passed away last year, and they have been reconsigned to Bruce Hershenson by his estate. Condition: very good to fine. Both mobiles have relatively minor wear, but they surely have survived in about as good condition as one could possibly hope (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
