Date Sold 4/9/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Meloy Bros. Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (40x60; measures 40" x 60") (Learn More) Broadway Hostess, the 1935 Frank McDonald New York City romantic love triangle musical melodrama ("Paint the town red with the lady in red"; about a small town girl who wants to become a famous singer, and she does, but it is bittersweet, because she loses the man she loves to another woman) starring Wini Shaw, Phil Regan, Lyle Talbot, Genevieve Tobin, Lyle Talbot, Allen Jenkins, and Marie Wilson. Note that star Wini Shaw was one of those people who seems to have everything necessary to be a major star, but who never quite gets there. This movie was her only starring role, and some have said she had one of the finest singing voices in the movies in the mid-1930s, but after this movie, she only got supporting roles, and she retired in 1937 after just a few years in movies. She is probably best remembered for having introduced the song "The Lullaby of Broadway" in "Gold Diggers of 1935". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of the special 40x60 posters that were created by the Meloy Bros. Inc company of Shelbyville, Indiana in 1935 and 1936! This company created special 40x60 posters that were distributed to theaters in the Midwest, and are NOT like 40x60 posters that were created by the studios at that time. VERY IMPORTANT! CLICK THIS LINK TO READ FULL INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SPECIAL POSTERS (do not bid on this poster until you have read the information on the linked page). Condition: good. There is surface paper loss and tiny paper loss around the edges of the poster (more so in the corners), and the poster is "lifting" from the board in the corners. There are creases and scuffs scattered throughout the poster, more so in the solid background areas, but there ARE some in the stars' faces (study our super-sized image to see exactly what they are, but they are not very distracting). There are also some other scuffs and smudges throughout the image and some dents and tiny areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster (please study our super-sized image to clearly see the above described defects). Certainly, a talented restorer could perform restoration to this poster, after which the defects would not be very noticeable at all, although this poster would require more restoration than some of the other Meloy Bros. posters we are auctioning.
