An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Mockery, the 1927 Benjamin Christensen silent Russian Revolution romantic love triangle melodrama (a really unusual story, where Lon Chaney Sr. is a half-witted Russian peasant living in Siberia at the start of the Russian Revolution; he helps a woman who promises to greatly improve his situation in life, and after he does, only after being brutally beaten, he learns she is a Countess; he helps her back to the palace, where she "rewards" him by making him an assistant in the kitchen!; she has a boyfriend who is a Captain in the White Army, and Chaney lusts after her; when the Revolution occurs, he thinks he is now "her equal", and he attempts to rape her, but he is stopped, and the Countess speaks well of him and saves his life, telling the soldiers that he has been loyal!) starring Lon Chaney Sr., Barbara Bedford, Ricardo Cortez, Mack Swain, and Emily Fitzroy. Note that this movie clearly owes a great debt to Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", as the theme of the story is extremely similar! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1927 movie paper from this Lon Chaney movie is incredibly rare. We have never sold even a single movie paper item (other than a German program) from this movie until we received this window card! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had paper loss starting in the left blank border below the word "LON". It affected a small bit of the left of the hand with the whip and the tiniest bit of the "M" of "Mockery". There was greater paper loss in the bottom of the left border, affecting the back end of Chaney's shirt and the entire "A M" of "A Metro". There was also light brown staining in the left of the card, going over the entire word "LON" and part of the "CH" of "CHANEY", as well as on the hand and the beginning of the whip, and on the left of the "M" of "Mockery". There was brown staining in the bottom, in the bottom of Chaney's figure and in the "Gol" of "Goldwyn" beneath it. The card was rippled in the bottom border below that area. There was brown staining in the upper right of the card, in the end of the "Y" of "Mockery" and in the white background to the right of it, with small paper loss below that, just entering the back of the woman's neck, and there was a small oval of paper loss in the woman's neck, affecting the tips of two of her fingers. There were two small areas of paper loss in the bottom blank border. Overall, the window card was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. A really expert restorer paperbacked the card and did minimal restoration to the above defects, expertly removing as much of the stains as possible by chemical means, and then performing paint restoration to the remaining defects, and replacing the exact areas of paper loss described above. From any reasonable viewing distance, the card looks fantastic, and even from close up, you don't get a sense of it being heavily restored, and truthfully, it is not. I am certain the new owner will be thrilled to display this wonderful window card on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
