The Village Blacksmith, the 1923 John Ford (billed as "Jack Ford") silent family relationship romantic melodrama ("A 1923 melodrama founded on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's immortal poem"; VERY loosely based on the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which begins "Under a spreading chestnut tree the village smithy stands", and which countless schoolboys were forced to memorize; about a small town with a village blacksmith who has two sons, one of whom was crippled when falling from a tree, and the town squire, who hates the blacksmith, but who has a pretty daughter that loves one of the blacksmith's sons) starring Will Walling, Virginia True Boardman, Virginia Valli, Ida Mae McKenzie, and David Butler.
