An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More)

Beyond the Rocks, the 1922 Sam Wood silent romantic love triangle melodrama (based on the novel by Elinor Glyn; a wild story of a poor English girl who marries a wealthy elderly man to help her father, but while mountain climbing, she is rescued by a dashing young man who she immediately falls in love with, but he doesn't want to break up her marriage, so he leaves; later, they meet by chance, and realize they are still in love, but she writes a letter to him saying how much she loves him but that they can't be together, and a former girlfriend of her young lover intercepts the letter and sends it to her husband instead; but the husband realizes that he doesn't want to stand in their way, so he goes exploring in Arabia, and is fatally wounded, and before he dies, he gives his blessing to his wife and her boyfriend!) starring Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino (billed as "Rodolph Valentino"), Edythe Chapman, Alec B. Francis, and Robert Bolder. Note that this was Valentino's second movie after "The Sheik", and it was released just six months later, so it was likely in production when "The Sheik" was being made. Consequently, he was second billed on the posters ("with Rodolph Valentino"), and he was still billed under his real name of "Rodolph", and he wasn't even mentioned on the title card. Just a few months later, he became the number one male star, fully on par with Swanson!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before previously auctioned this window card! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a heavy paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards.

UPDATED 02/18/2019: Note that we have added more detail to the Condition Description.

What IS paperbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the window card had pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges, with creases scattered throughout the image. There was a 3" tear in Swanson's sleeve extending into the background to the right of it, with other tears below that area, but there was no damage in the rest of Swanson's figure or in Valentino's figure. The lettering at the top was affected by the above defects. Overall, the window card was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. The window card was pretty well restored, but you can see the signs of damage in Swanson's sleeve and most of the lettering was repainted, as was the border areas. In addition, the card originally read "27" in the top right corner, but enough of the seven was missing that the restorer guessed what the number should have been, and he made it a "21". After the card was backed, it acquired some tiny chips in the bottom blank border and damage in the top left corner (see our image). This card can certainly be displayed as it is, or one could choose to have additional restoration performed without re-backing it, but bear in mind the defects and restoration before placing a bid on it. Of course, if one decided to have additional restoration performed, they would likely want to have the "21" changed back to the "27" that it originally was (but that will be the choice of the new owner).
