Date Sold 5/3/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1935 (from the first release of this movie in Italy) Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian Two-Panel (known in Italy as a "4 Fogli") Movie Poster (2p; measures 55" x 78" [140 x 198 cm]) (Learn More) The Scarlet Pimpernel, the 1934 (released in the U.S. in 1935) Harold Young English historical French Revolution romantic disguised hero adventure comedy ("The Scarlet Pimpernel who was he... what was his strange power?"; produced by Alexander Korda) starring Leslie Howard (in the title role as Sir Percy Blakeney/The Scarlet Pimpernel), Merle Oberon, Raymond Massey, Nigel Bruce, Bramwell Fletcher, and Anthony Bushell. Note that this movie was based on the 1905 book by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, and the lead character is a "mild-mannered" English aristocrat by day, who by night poses as "The Scarlet Pimpernel", a dashing hero who rescues victims of the French Revolution, and not even his wife knows his "secret identity"! It seems quite likely that Joe Simon and Jerry Schuster at least partly based their Superman character on this character, given the huge similarities between them (except the Scarlet Pimpernel had no super powers!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: F. Matticari Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 1935 first release Italian poster! Not only that, but we previously auctioned a 1950s re-release Italian two-panel, but we have never auctioned any other first release Italian movie paper. It is fascinating that the Italian distributor that created this poster either accidentally (or accidentally on purpose!) credited producer/writer Alexander Korda as director of the movie! It seems highly unlikely that any other country's posters would have this mistake! This is an extremely rare pre-World War II Italian poster! Virtually no Italian posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II (mostly only pre-war heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in Italy during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Note that this Italian two-panel was printed in 2 sections designed to overlap. Also note that the theater that used this poster glued the pieces together before putting them on display (this is typical of many actual theater-used posters in multiple pieces). Condition: good. The theater that used this poster glued the pieces together before putting them on display (this is typical of many actual theater-used posters in multiple pieces). The poster has tears and tiny paper loss on parts of several foldlines, and it has some light staining in parts of the borders and folds. However, any talented restorer could linenback this poster and repair the above defects, and afterwards, it will display wonderfully! Learn More about condition grades
