Stradivari, the 1935 Geza von Bolvary German World War I (WWI) musical violinist romantic biography melodrama starring Veit Harlan (in the title role as Antonio Stradivari), Gustav Frohlich, Sybille Schmitz, Albrecht Schoenhals, Harald Paulsen, Hilde Kruger and Veit Harlan (in the title role as Antonio Stradivari). Note that this is a "forbidden" movie. This refers to around 60 movies that were made in Germany between 1933 and 1945, during the time the Nazis were in power in Germany. These movies are considered to be propaganda movies, which glorify the Nazi regime and their ideals. Immediately after World War II, a list of over 100 movies that were made between 1933 and 1945 was created, and those movies were not allowed to be shown at any time in Germany or Austria. Over the next decade, around 60 of those movies (including this one) were taken off the list so that they are allowed to be shown (but rarely are), and those movies are known as "forbidden movies", because even though they can now be shown, they could not be shown at all in the years right after World War II. The remaining 40 or so movies are known as "conditional" movies, because they are still not allowed to be shown in Germany or Austria, even in the present day, with the sole exception being when they are shown in an educational context, like at a university, and a speaker talks before and after the movie. All of the "forbidden" movies and "conditional" movies glorify Nazism in some respect, or they were created by directors or featured actors who were prominently associated with the Nazi party. Note that this movie was added to the "forbidden" movies list because it starred Veit Harlan. After this movie, he stopped acting and became a director, and most of those movies are "forbidden" movies, including "Jud Suss". After the war, he was tried for war crimes, but he argued that he had been forced to director "Jud Suss", but Joseph Goebbels' diary showed that he had been enthusiastic in making it, and the diary said "Harlan did a great job. It is the most anti-Semitic movie"! It is also interesting to note that Harlan's niece was Susanne Christian, who married Stanley Kubrick, who was Jewish! Note that director Veit Harlan was one of the most infamous of the Nazi film directors, directing Jud Suss and many other virulent anti-Jewish Nazi movies during World War II. After the war, almost ALL of his movies were banned, not just the anti-Jewish ones, and he was put on trial for war crimes. But in 1950, after several trials, he was set free, and in 1951, he resumed making movies, making a dozen of them until his passing in 1964. This was a German language version of this movie, and there was also a French language version. Universal did the same thing with "Dracula" in 1931. They filmed the movie twice, once in English, and once in Spanish, with two entirely different casts, U.S. actors for the English version and mostly Latin actors for the Spanish version, obviously for release in Spanish speaking countries, and the same was done with this movie, except it was released in German and French (the French language version starred Fernand Bercher and Pierre Richard-Willm).
