An Original Vintage Magazine (measures 8 1/2" x 11 1/2" [22 x 29 cm]) (Learn More) Photoplay, the leading movie magazine sold to the public from the 1910s through the 1940s ("The World's Leading Moving Picture Magazine"; "America's largest-selling movie magazine"). It began publication in 1909 as a thick 6 3/4" x 10" magazine, and within a year, it hit on its successful formula of running heavily illustrated stories about current movies and their stars. We don't know exactly when they switched to the full size, but it was some time around 1917. Each issue features a great full color cover of a leading star of the day, plus lots of interior publicity stories about current stars and movies with many color and black and white images throughout. Also, in every issue are many wonderful vintage ads, some in color and some in black and white, and sometimes the ads can be just as much fun as the original stories and pictures. Of course, some of the ads are from movies that were about to open, and in the early days of eBay, people would remove those full-page ads and auction them by themselves, and they would often sell for $10, $20, or more, just for a single movie ad removed from a magazine just like this! Note that for a brief time starting around 1940, Photoplay switched to a larger format that measured just under 11" x 14". But apparently this was not as popular with their readers as the regular magazine size, and so they switched back to that size around 2 years later (these larger issues are more scarce than the regular sized ones and more difficult to find in nice condition). Also note that during World War II, Photoplay combined with Movie Mirror and for a brief time, the title read "Photoplay combined with Movie Mirror", but then reverted back to simply being called "Photoplay". Artist: Carl Van Buskirk Important Added Info: Note that over all our years of auctioning, we have sold two examples of this magazine. One was in much lesser condition, but the other was in "very good" condition, and that example sold for $831, and this example is in slightly better condition than that example! Note that we have provided a picture of the front cover of the magazine, and pictures of interior two-page spreads (including the table of contents page if there is one; but we didn't make much effort to find the best ones!). These images should greatly help you judge the overall condition of the magazine, and the contents page lets you know exactly what articles and stories are contained in this particular issue. Please know that these magazines are sealed in bags and are ready for shipping, and we cannot answer any questions about them or look through them for you, so please bid (or do not bid) based on the images we have provided. Condition: very good. The magazine has some faint brown staining around the edges of the cover, with a tiny tear in the right of the cover, and a crease in the top right corner. It has some brown stains in the left and top of the back cover, and also the last interior page. It has some slight brown staining in the right outer edge of a few interior pages. But other than the above, the magazine is in nice condition. It has a tight spine, with a small tear at the top, and has a generally "unused" feel to it, and the pages are not at all darkened or fragile (other than the small staining described above), which is really unusual for a 1920s movie magazine. Please look at our many images of to get a good sense of the condition of this rare and desirable magazine. Learn More about condition grades
