An Original Vintage Theatrical 11" x 14 1/4" [28 x 36 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Belle of the Nineties (some movie paper was prepared with the working title "It Ain't No Sin"), the 1934 Leo McCarey riverboat entertainer romantic comedy ( "Mae West.... in the picture the whole country is talking about"; about a sexy cabaret entertainer who has a tough boxer boyfriend, but who attracts the attention of every man who sees her) starring Mae West, Roger Pryor, Johnny Mack Brown, Katherine DeMille, John Miljan, Libby Taylor, and Duke Ellington's Orchestra. Note that the movie's working title was "It Ain't No Sin", but the censors refused to allow it, and it was changed, even though some posters exist with that title. They tried to change the title to "St. Louis Woman", but the residents of that city protested, and their next title was "Belle of New Orleans", but they received similar protests, and they settled on the non-controversial "Belle of the Nineties"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this still measures 11" x 14 1/4" [28 x 36 cm]. Note that this is one of 80 deluxe oversized stills (measuring 11" x 14" or similar) which were consigned to us, and they all originated from the legendary James Card Collection! We auctioned 100 other stills from this collection in our September Major Auction, and those mostly auctioned for between $30 and $250 each, with a few selling for more, with the highest selling for $535! Now we have 80 more from that collection in this set of auctions. James Card was a film preservationist who, starting in 1948, worked at the newly created George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, and he helped build their massive motion picture collection, preserving movies that had been forgotten at that time. In 1955, he discovered that Louise Brooks was living as a recluse in New York City, and he persuaded her to move to Rochester, where she wrote many letters and some books about her legendary career. Not only do these 100 oversized stills (which we are auctioning individually) have wonderful "provenance", but there is also no fear that they are not from their first release (and many of the stills have photographer stamps on the back or embossed, and some have other information on the back, and several have a stamp that identifies them as being from the "James Card Collection"! Condition: good. There is a studio-issued snipe over the bottom border and many tears in the top border, some repaired with tape from the back. Learn More about condition grades
