An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Mother and the Law, the 1919 D.W. Griffith silent family relationship murder melodrama starring Mae Marsh, Robert Harron, Miriam Cooper, Vera Lewis, and Sam De Grasse. Note that D.W. Griffith followed up his massive 1915 success, "The Birth of a Nation", with the 1916 "Intolerance", which was a multi-section movie showing intolerance through the ages. It was not nearly as successful as "The Birth of a Nation", so to try to reap more financial rewards out of it, Griffith in 1919, re-edited the "modern" portion of this movie (set in the then "present day" of 1916), and expanded it (using discarded footage and also shooting new footage) into this feature film, re-titled "Mother and the Law". He also did the same with the portion of "Intolerance" that was set in Babylon, and it was released as "The Fall of Babylon". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a one-sheet from this movie (and NO other movie paper of any kind) until we received this half-sheet! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we know it would definitely lessen its condition, so we will only send it in a very large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had a 1" x 3" area of paper loss in the middle of the right border and some tiny pinholes and tears in the rest of the borders. Other than the above defects, the poster was in surprisingly nice condition prior to paperbacking, especially considering it is over a century old. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
