An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu, the 1929 Rowland V. Lee China crime thriller ("Why did the sign of the dragon throw terror into their hearts?"; "Thrills - Mystery - Drama - Love"; "From the story by Sax Rohmer") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Doctor Fu Manchu), Jean Arthur, Neil Hamilton, O.P. Heggie, William Austin, and Tully Marshall. Note that Jean Arthur seemed like a beautiful young starlet at this time, but actually, she was 29 years old and had been making movies for six years. But when audiences heard her very distinctive voice, she quickly became a star, and she was third billed in this movie! Also note that this was the first movie featuring Dr. Fu Manchu, created by Sax Rohmer, and played by Warner Oland, who would go on to have a successful career playing a very different Asian, Charlie Chan. The following year, Oland reprised his role in a sequel, "The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu". The following year brought "Daughter of the Dragon", with Anna May Wong playing Oland's daughter. That same year, Warner Oland made his first Charlie Chan movie, and without him, the series seemed over, but in 1932, Boris Karloff starred in "The Mask of Fu Manchu", and there have been a number of other Fu Manchu movies over the years since! Important Added Info: Note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good. The card had some stains scattered throughout, with some small areas of paper loss in the image, and some small tears in the borders. Overall, the card was in fair to good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card (meaning they backed the card onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Given the card's many defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration, but the card displays pretty well (see our super-sized image of the front to get a good sense of exactly how the card looks now, and our image of the back to get a sense of the defects the card originally had).
