An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Proud Valley (released in the U.S. in 1941 as "The Tunnel"), the 1940 Pen Tennyson English Welsh coal mining cave-in disaster melodrama (about an American seaman who goes to work in a Welsh mining town; there is a cave-in and the workers want to rescue the trapped miners, but the management refuses; ultimately, Robeson sacrifices his life so that the trapped miners can be rescued) starring Paul Robeson (one of the first black African American actors to achieve success in mainstream sound movies; "The Samson of Song!"), Edward Chapman, Simon Lack, Rachel Thomas, Dilys Thomas, Edward Rigby, and Janet Johnson. Note that the producers of this melodrama wanted to give Paul Robeson a chance to use his magnificent voice, so they had scenes where he sings in the local church choir! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that original movie paper from this movie is extremely scarce! Over the years, we have auctioned two first release British quads (which are two-color), and one earlier example of this full-color one-sheet (which sold in 1994 for $1,725), and we have not seen any other items until we were consigned this one-sheet 17 years later! Note that the poster is undated, but it has a litho number, and comparing this number to our massive database of litho numbers taken from actual movie posters, we can determine that this poster is almost certainly from 1941, which was the time of the first U.S. release of this movie, because the litho number is very close to those of many 1941 releases! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had minor wear on the foldlines and pinholes in the corners.
