Date Sold 8/30/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Magazine (measures 8" x 11" [20 x 28 cm]) (Learn More) Down Beat ("Music News From Coast-to-Coast"), the weekly magazine devoted to jazz music starting in 1934. In later years, it added "jazz, blues and beyond" to indicate its coverage of other types of music. The name "Down Beat" comes from the music term "beat one" or the first beat of a musical measure. Early issues of the magazine were printed in a large 11 1/4" x 15 3/4" format, but they were cleverly folded over with a cover half that size, so that they could be displayed on conventional news stands along with other magazines. Important Added Info: Note that this magazine has a great article about jazz musician Barney Bigard, who was barred from joining the White Musicians' Union in Los Angeles (he was told to join the Black Musicians' Union)! He said that he is "not a Negro", because he is of French and Spanish ancestry, and besides, there was only one union back in New York where he came from! Also note that we have provided a picture of the front cover of the magazine, and pictures of interior two-page spreads (including the table of contents page if there is one; but we didn't make much effort to find the best ones!). These images should greatly help you judge the overall condition of the magazine, and the contents page lets you know exactly what articles and stories are contained in this particular issue. Please know that these magazines are sealed in bags and are ready for shipping, and we cannot answer any questions about them or look through them for you, so please bid (or do not bid) based on the images we have provided. Condition: very good. Note that we have attempted to check to see if the magazine is complete and uncut, and we believe that it is. However, there is a slight possibility that we might have missed a small cut or a page that was neatly removed, and if that happens, you can return the magazine. We have solely provided an overall description of the condition of the magazine, but you can also refer to our super-sized images. Please bid (or not bid) based on that overall grade and by viewing the super-sized images. Learn More about condition grades
