(Learn More) The Defense Rests, the 1934 Lambert Hillyer romantic courtroom lawyer legal organized crime murder melodrama ("He double-crossed justice until love double-crossed him!"; "He defended the criminals who ruled his life!"; "Story and Screen Play by Jo Swerling"; a clever story of a lawyer who defends gangsters; his assistant is a pretty woman who is also a lawyer, and she begs him to quit working for crooks; he even has a woman knowingly commit perjury, and his assistant tells him he could get disbarred for doing that, and he laughs at her and tells her to turn him in; but when he is blackmailed by gangsters over a different case, he realizes he needs to change his ways, but he fears he will be disbarred over the case involving his assistant, but she comes up with the perfect solution, which is for them to get married, so that she can't, as his wife, testify against her husband!) starring Jack Holt, Jean Arthur, Nat Pendleton, Arthur Hohl, and Raymond Walburn. Note that this movie certainly seems to have been way ahead of its time, not only because Jean Arthur is a female lawyer, which was surely a rarity in 1934, but also because she is given a substantial role in the movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good, NO CUTS. The pressbook was removed from a bound volume. There were three large punch holes down the left edge of all pages (they affect some of the writing and images on many pages) and the pages became separated at one point, and someone tried to repair them with tape, but much of the tape is long gone leaving yellowed stains in those areas. There is thick tape on the front and back of the spine edge of the covers. Learn More about condition grades
