An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22") (Learn More) My Man Godfrey, the classic 1936 Gregory La Cava (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) family relationship Depression era romantic comedy ("A New Universal Picture"; "The first five star triumph of the new movie season!"; "Based on the novel by Eric Hotch"; about young idle rich Carole Lombard and her extremely eccentric family, and she needs to find a "homeless man" for a scavenger hunt, and she hires him as her butler, and falls completely in love with him!) starring William Powell (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Godfrey), Carole Lombard (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Alice Brady (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Gail Patrick, Jean Dixon, Eugene Pallette, Alan Mowbray, Mischa Auer (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), John Auer, John Light, and Pat Flaherty NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: fair. The card was found in the back of a picture frame, and it had been trimmed to 12" x 16" (because it was used as a backing board for a picture!). Many years ago, the card was given to Igor Edelman and he linenbacked the card and added the missing area (which was the right 2" of the card and the top 6" of the card). The replaced area on the right of the card is the end of the "N" of "MAN" in the title and part of the "RD" of "LOMBARD" and part of the "le" of "Carole". The replaced area at the top of the card is most of William Powell's credit except for the "P" and part of the bottom of the other letters, and most of the top of the letters of Lombard's name, and both of their first names. In addition to the trimming, the card had stains in Lombard's shoulder and Powell's hair, and many cracks and tears down the left side of the card and some in the bottom right of the card. Mr. Edelman did a pretty good job of touching up the card, and a very nice job of re-creating the missing lettering. But the card was roughly handled over the years, and the cracks in the left and right are worse now, and the paint restoration has faded enough to where it is somewhat noticeable. If I owned this extremely rare card, I would certainly give it to a talented restorer and have them remove it from the linen, and re-back it. After proper restoration, it will look great, although it will of course require a considerable amount of restoration (one might wish for a better example of this card, but I have no idea where they might find it, and if they did, it would undoubtedly cost a fortune!).
