Follow local regulations") encouraging people to take care with fire and featuring art of Smokey The Bear and a photo of a man watching a fire responsibly. Here is some background on Smokey the Bear: In 1944 the U.S. Forest Service issued a poster featuring "Smokey Bear", and he wore jeans and a campaign hat (what we now call a ranger hat). His slogan was "Smokey says - Care will prevent 9 out of 10 forest fires!". Over the next decade, Smokey would change in appearance as the artist who drew him changed, and he would get the slogan "Remember! Only you can prevent forest fires", and eventually, he became "Smokey the Bear"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
