A 1954 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Third Man (also released as "The 3rd Man"), the classic 1949 Carol Reed (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) English Vienna Austria crime film noir murder mystery mistaken identity thriller ("Cats loved him... And so did Women!"; "What a chase he led them!"; "He'll put you in a dither with his Zither"; based on a story "by Graham Greene"; "Hunted by men... Sought by women!"; "Presented by Alexander Korda and David O. Selznick"; about a man going to visit his old friend in post-War Vienna, and when he gets there, he discovers that the friend is dead, or is he?) starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli (billed as "Valli"), Orson Welles (even though Welles only appears in a small portion of the movie, he dominates it!), Trevor Howard, Bernard Lee, Paul Horbiger, and Hedwig Bleibtreu. Note that the musical score for this movie was by Austrian zither musician Anton Karas, and it was so memorable that they even made a tagline about it ("He'll put you in a dither with his Zither"). Also note that this was intended to be the first of several movies with producers David Selznick and Alexander Korda, but the men clashed frequently during the making of the movie, and they never worked together again. Also note that Orson Welles clashed with director Carol Reed, and reportedly, he wrote much of his character's dialog in the movie, and made other contributions to the script that likely drove Reed crazy! Selznick was behind many of the greatest movies of the 1930s to 1950s. In each case, he would release the movie through a major studio for its first release only, and then would himself re-release the movie many times over the following years, thus resulting in many different one-sheets for each of his movies, and often some of the early re-releases have been mistakenly sold as originals. Since the re-releases were almost never dated, or affiliated with another studio, it makes them difficult to date, UNLESS they have a litho number, and comparing the litho number on the poster to our massive database of litho numbers taken from actual movie posters, we can determine that this poster is almost certainly from 1954! Condition: good to very good. There were three tears in the bottom border, one that was 1", one that was 3", and one that was 5", and all three were repaired with clear tape from the back. There is one other piece of clear tape on the back of the bottom border and a piece of clear tape on the back of the bottom right crossfold. There was a small area of paper loss in the lower right blank border, and a similar area of paper loss in the left of the bottom blank border (someone taped a piece of paper to the back of that second area of paper loss). The above defects are basically pretty minor, and after a simple linenbacking by a talented professional, the poster will look fantastic, and there will be little need of paint restoration anywhere in the image.
