Date Sold 5/3/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More) Spartacus, the classic 1960 Stanley Kubrick sword-and-sandal Ancient Wars gladiator sports action adventure epic ("Winner of 4 Academy Awards!"; "They trained him to kill for their pleasure... But they trained him a little too well..."; "A mighty motion picture!"; "Based on the novel by Howard Fast"; written by Dalton Trumbo) starring Kirk Douglas (in the title role as Spartacus), Laurence Olivier (as Crassus, who liked both oysters and snails, or was it truffles and artichokes?), Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton (as Gracchus), Peter Ustinov (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Woody Strode (as Draba), Tony Curtis ("as Antoninus"), John Gavin (as Julius Caesar), Charles McGraw (as the gladiator trainer), and Herbert Lom. Note that Kirk Douglas was the producer of this movie and originally Anthony Mann was directing. But three weeks into filming, Douglas fired Mann and replaced him with Stanley Kubrick, who then fired Sabine Bethmann, who had been the female lead, and replaced her with Jean Simmons! Also note that Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted during the HUAAC hearings in the early 1950s, and he was still blacklisted at this time, so he was not going to receive screen credit. Kubrick heard this and wanted to be given the screenwriter credit (since someone had to be credited), but producer Douglas courageously insisted on Trumbo receiving the credit on screen, which effectively ended the blacklist! Artist: Reynold Brown & Saul Bass Important Added Info: Note that this is an incredibly rare poster that we have never auctioned before, and we have not seen it for sale anywhere! At first glance, it looks to have the same "gold coins" art by Reynold Brown that is on the roadshow one-sheet, but it is different art that also includes artwork by each head (this same art was used on the British quad, but not on any other U.S. posters we have seen). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had paper cut from the bottom left and bottom right corners. In the bottom left corner, it measured 6" high (counting the bottom blank border) by 20" wide. In the bottom right corner, it measured 5 1/2" high by 5 1/2" wide. The poster had small paper loss in the red background below the "nive" of "Universal" at bottom center and it had small paper loss in the crossfold that fell in the top left corner of Curtis' "coin" (in the background area). It had paper loss in the bottom left of Olivier's "coin", affecting his shoulder. Otherwise, the poster had just some tiny bits of paper loss on small parts of some folds and the most minor of border wear. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The missing areas at the bottom left and right corners were really expertly recreated by a very talented restorer, and I doubt virtually anyone viewing this poster would be aware of that restoration. The poster looks fantastic, and will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall. Of course, one would prefer to find an example of this poster in better condition, but, as we said above, we have NEVER seen or heard of another example of this poster!
