An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Ape Man, the 1943 William Beaudine science fiction (sci-fi) monster horror thriller (based on the story by Karl Brown) starring Bela Lugosi (in the title role as the monster, Dr. James Brewster), Louise Currie, Wallace Ford, Henry Hall, Minerva Urecal, and Emil Van Horn (as the gorilla). Note that Ray 'Crash' Corrigan and Charles Gemora were two actors who played lots of gorillas in movies in the 1930s and 1940s. Emil Van Horn and Jack Leonard each played around a dozen gorillas, and interestingly, that was all they did (no doubt all four of them owned a gorilla suit!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only once before auctioned this really cool first release one-sheet, and that was 25 years ago, when it auctioned for $1,150! First release posters are probably so rare because the movie was quickly re-released in 1949, and that re-release probably caused the exchanges to use up any first release posters that were left. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had some tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss scattered on parts of some folds. It had a crease in the lower left that extended into Lugosi's beard and chin. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone mounted the poster onto a thin linen with no restoration. It was framed, and the linen was glued to a backing board, and there is much residue on the back of the linen and on the edges of the excess linen, but it does not affect the poster itself. The poster is "lifting" from the linen in the right end of the bottom horizontal fold. If I owned this cool and rare poster, I would immediately have it removed from the old linen and re-backed, and after pretty minor restoration to the above defects, the poster will display wonderfully!
