It was first described by Thomas Edison in 1888 and developed by his employee William Kennedy Laurie Dickson between 1889 and 1892. On April 14, 1894, the first commercial exhibition of motion pictures in history was given at a Kinetoscope parlor in New York City. More parlors followed and the success of the Kinetoscope in both America and Europe eventually lead to the invention of the first commercially successful movie projection system.
