An Original 1923 (from the first release of this movie in Sweden) Vintage Theatrical Folded Swedish Movie Poster (measures 22 3/4" x 35 1/2" [58 x 90 cm]) (Learn More)

Beyond the Rocks, the 1922 Sam Wood silent romantic love triangle melodrama (based on the novel by Elinor Glyn; a wild story of a poor English girl who marries a wealthy elderly man to help her father, but while mountain climbing, she is rescued by a dashing young man who she immediately falls in love with, but he doesn't want to break up her marriage, so he leaves; later, they meet by chance, and realize they are still in love, but she writes a letter to him saying how much she loves him but that they can't be together, and a former girlfriend of her young lover intercepts the letter and sends it to her husband instead; but the husband realizes that he doesn't want to stand in their way, so he goes exploring in Arabia, and is fatally wounded, and before he dies, he gives his blessing to his wife and her boyfriend!) starring Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino (billed as "Rodolph Valentino"), Edythe Chapman, Alec B. Francis, and Robert Bolder. Note that this was Valentino's second movie after "The Sheik", and it was released just six months later, so it was likely in production when "The Sheik" was being made. Consequently, he was second billed on the posters ("with Rodolph Valentino"), and he was still billed under his real name of "Rodolph", and he wasn't even mentioned on the title card. Just a few months later, he became the number one male star, fully on par with Swanson!

Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, this movie was made after The Sheik, but likely the posters were created before Valentino became a major star, because he was billed second to Swanson, and as "Rodolph". By the time the movie was released in Sweden just one year later, he WAS a major star, and so the Swedish distributor gave him billing over Swanson, but he was still billed as "Rodolph"! Note also that this is an incredibly rare poster. We have only auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and that was 29 years ago! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube (because re-folding it would make the creases more prominent, and we will only do that if the winning bidder wants it done).

Condition: good to very good. The poster has some creases along the folds with a few tiny tears in parts of the borders. The poster was roughly handled and it has many creases in the bottom 4". But after a simple linenbacking the poster will display wonderfully and likely will require very little restoration. Also note that there is a piece of masking tape on he back of the center of the top and bottom borders that extends past the border. It appears to have been put there to make it easier to display the poster, and it is easily removed by a professional or talented amateur.
