An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Dragon Painter, the 1919 William Worthington silent Japanese artist romantic melodrama (a clever story of a young great painter who is obsessed with finding a mythical "dragon princess" hiding in the mountains of Japan; he meets a master painter who treats him like a son, and the old painter convinces his daughter to pose as the "dragon princess"; it works too well, because after the young painter marries her, he loses his interest in painting; his wife feels terrible and leaves a suicide note, but actually joins a religious order; her husband tries to drown himself, but while he is drowning, he sees a vision of her telling him to start painting again, and he does, painting a masterpiece, and when she hears what he has done, she leaves the religious order and they are reunited) starring Sessue Hayakawa (in the title role as Tatsu, the Dragon Painter), Toyo Fujita, Edward Peil Sr., and Tsuru Aoki NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that Sessue Hayakawa is best remembered for his starring role in "The Bridge on the River Kwai", but he was a major star in Hollywood, playing stereotyped Asian villains in the late 1910s and early 1920s. Very few posters from those early movies are known to have survived, and this poster has a great stone litho image of Hayakawa and an Asian woman in a richly decorated kimono! Condition: very good to fine. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds, and minor wear along the foldlines. There were creases and some tiny tears in the top and bottom horizontal foldlines. The blank borders of the poster had been slightly trimmed (blank white paper only). Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was really well backed, and looks great! The restorer added the missing paper to the edges of the blank borders, and I doubt anyone could tell they were replaced!
