A 1954 Re-release (re-titled "Immortal Battalion" for this re-release) Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28") (Learn More)

The Way Ahead, the 1944 Carol Reed English World War II (WWII) North Africa army military melodrama (about British soldiers preparing for fighting Rommel in Africa during World War II, and about a specific group of recruits and the lieutenant who whips them into shape) starring David Niven, Raymond Huntley, William Hartnell, Stanley Holloway, Penelope Ward, Trevor Howard (in his very first movie, as one of the officers), and a "foreword by Quentin Reynolds". Note that this movie had an unusual origin. Winston Churchill wanted to make a movie that would do for the British Army what "In Which We Serve" had done for the British Navy, and he approached David Niven about starring in such a movie. They took a 44 minute training film called "The New Lot" and hired writers Eric Ambler and Peter Ustinov to expand that into a feature film, adding the story of Niven training the new recruits. They got Carol Reed to direct the movie, but because he had to incorporate the documentary footage, the movie is told in a semi-documentary fashion. It was a major success in its English release, and was released in the U.S. the following year, also to much acclaim.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that for this 1954 re-release, the poster designers gave Trevor Howard a major credit and image, equal to that of the other top co-stars, even though on the original advertising, he was neither billed nor pictured (because this was his very first movie)! Also note that this poster has never been machine folded! Most half-sheet posters were folded once horizontally and once vertically right off of the printing press. It is very difficult to find an unfolded example of most half-sheets, especially from before 1970!

Condition: fine. The poster is in quite nice condition!
