An Autographed Letter (measures 8" x 10 1/2" [20 x 27 cm]) (Learn More) Craig Flessel was a comic book artist, illustrator and cartoonist from the 1930s to the 2000s. He worked for magazines ranging from Boys' Life to Playboy. But he is certainly best remembered for being one of the earliest comic book illustrators, and he drew the cover of many of the pre-Batman Detective Comics, including #2 in 1937 (which was published before the 1938 Action Comics #1 featuring the first DC superhero, Superman, and much before Detective #27, featuring the second DC superhero, Batman). He was a 2006 nominee for induction into the comics industry's Will Eisner Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 96. Important Added Info: Note that this signed letter has been personally autographed (signed) by Craig Flessel! He entirely hand wrote the letter and he seems shocked to be asked for an autograph (he put "mine?")! Of course, we imagine few people were seeking his autograph in 1962, before the modern comic book collecting hobby had even begun! Also note that this auction also includes the printed envelope this item originally came with! Our consignor is a longtime collector who purchased this signed item from a reputable dealer. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic.
