An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Cecil B. DeMille's Cleopatra, the 1934 Cecil B. DeMille historical ancient Egypt romantic love triangle desert epic ("'The Siren of the Nile'... Most famous woman of love who ever lived!"; "A love affair that shook the world, set in a spectacle of thrilling magnificence!"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Claudette Colbert (in the title role as Cleopatra), Warren William (as Julius Caesar), Henry Wilcoxon (as Marc Antony), Joseph Schildkraut (as King Herod), Ian Keith (as Octavian), C. Aubrey Smith, Gertrude Michael (as Calpurnia), Arthur Hohl (as Brutus), Edwin Maxwell (as Casca), Ian Maclaren (as Cassius), and David Niven (in his third role, uncredited in a bit part as a slave!). Note that there had been a 1917 silent version of this movie with Theda Bara in the leading role, and it was remade in 1963 with Elizabeth Taylor (and, of course, there have been many other depictions of Cleopatra in movies all through the years). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that if one were to compile a "short list" of the finest movie poster images from major films of the 1930s, THIS poster would surely be near the top of the list! There is also a style B one-sheet for this movie that oddly has three headshots of the stars down the left, and very little imagery in the rest of the poster. We have auctioned that much lesser style B one-sheet only one time two years ago for $6,305, and we have only once before ever auctioned this magnificent style A one-sheet, and that was 20 years ago, when it auctioned for $12,650. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and a 1" tear and a 1/2" tear in the left of the middle horizontal fold, in the blue background. It had just a few tiny bits of paper loss on all of the other folds, with tiny staple holes around the edges. The colors of the poster had not faded in the slightest, and they are likely as fresh as they looked when the poster was first displayed over 80 years ago! Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was really expertly backed by a wonderful restorer and it will look incredible on the new owner's wall (and I certainly hope it is displayed where many people can enjoy it!).
