An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" (8x10) Movie Still (Learn More) Marie Dressler was a Canadian actress from the 1910s to the 1930s. She was born in 1868, and was on Broadway in her 20s, and in 1914, starred in "Tillie's Punctured Romance" over a very young Charlie Chaplin; but her career waned and she quit films a few years later returning to Broadway, and by the late 1920s, her career seemed over; but legendary producer Irving Thalberg cast her in "Anna Christie" in 1930, and she rapidly became a major star, in spite of her advanced age and plain face, appearing in many of MGM's greatest movies, as well as a series of very successful comedies; she received the Best Actress Oscar for Min and Bill in 1930, and is probably best remembered for her role in Dinner at Eight; sadly, she died of cancer in 1934 at the age of 65. Some of her other movies include: The Patsy, Tugboat Annie, Emma (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and The Girl Said No Important Added Info: Note that the still shows a great candid image of Marie Dressler sitting at her home in Beverly Hills, reading a book!
