The modern version of the circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. With weakening attendance and high operating costs, the circus closed on May 21st, 2017 after 146 years. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster has metal grommets in each corner (they were surely put there either when it was created or when it was used at a circus). There is a paper snipe glued to the bottom of the poster that has some slight extra paper at the top. There are small tears, tape stains, and some tiny paper loss in the top border, and some creases along the bottom of the paper snipe. The poster is on a thin linen that we imagine was added at the same time the paper snipe was, or else it would not be on the back of both the poster and the snipe. The above defects are not that significant, one could display this wonderful poster just as it is, or one could choose to have it properly linenbacked, first removing the old linen (and during that time, one could choose whether to keep the snipe at the bottom or to not keep it, but it certainly lends a lot of history to the poster). Note that the person who owned this poster stored it rolled, with the image area rolled outward, so it will be sent to the new owner in that way. Learn More about condition grades
