An Unfolded Dutch Special Poster (measures 20" x 30" [51 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) Nederlanders Gij Zijt Vrij (literally translates to "Dutch You are Free"), the circa 1945 Dutch poster telling citizens to not buy food from the black market. This poster is most likely referring to the end of the Dutch famine of 1944-1945, which was a famine that took place in the German-occupied part of the Netherlands, especially in the densely populated western provinces north of the great rivers, during the winter. A German blockade cut off food and fuel shipments from farm areas and some 4.5 million were affected, with as many as 22,000 dying as a result. Citizens often turned to the black market for their food needs. The famine was alleviated by the liberation of the area by the Allies in May 1945.
