An Original 1921 Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari (released in the U.S. in 1921 and in England in 1924 as "The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari"), the 1920 Robert Wiene German expressionism silent horror thriller ("A thrilling fantastic photo-play"; about a man who sleepwalks in a disturbing world and there is a mysterious Dr. Caligari who seems to be his arch enemy!) starring Werner Krauss (in the title role as Doctor Caligari), Conrad Veidt (as Cesare, the somnambulist), Friedrich Feher, Lil Dagover, and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski. Note that this movie is considered by many to be the first major horror movie ever. Much of the movie takes place within the dreams of the sleepwalker, and the sets are distorted to reflect his distorted mind (they were made of paper and the shadows were painted on to the paper!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this wonderful still has a stamp on the back reading "The CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI DISTRIBUTED BY GOLDWYN", which guarantees that it is from the very first U.S. release of this movie in 1921. Note that ANY first release U.S. movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a complete set of 8 lobby cards (33 years ago), two one-sheets (33 years ago and 27 years ago), a glass slide, and four stills from this movie (only two of which showed Krauss in the title role, and that was the same image as this, but oddly printed in negative!), and NO other first release U.S. movie paper, until we received this fourth still! Condition: very good. There is tiny paper loss in the bottom left blank corner and some emulsion loss in the bottom blank border. There were some very tiny bits of surface paper loss in the bottom left of the image and someone touched up those areas. There are a few faint scuffs scattered in the still, but they are mostly only noticeable when the still is tilted to the light. Other than the above defects, the still is in pretty nice condition.
