Date Sold 2/27/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Shanghai, the 1935 James Tinling China Asian detective mystery opium drug smuggling crime thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Irene Hervey, Jon Hall (billed as "Charles Locher"), Russell Hicks, and Keye Luke. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Now we have been consigned two different lobby cards, and we are auctioning them in two different auctions. It is not only the lobby cards that are rare. The only U.S. poster we have auctioned is one example of the one-sheet, and it auctioned for $11,211 17 years ago! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: fair to good. The card has significant staining in three corners, extending into the image, and some scattered down the right of the card, but not in the bottom right corner. There is a small censor stamp near the center of the bottom blank border, likely when the movie was shown in England. There is a faint scuff mark running at a slight diagonal from the middle left of the card across the center, going through Oland's lower lip. There is a faint slightly diagonal scratch mark running from the right border to the middle of the lower part of the image, ending in Oland's sleeve. The card has had no restoration, and if I owned this incredibly rare and cool card, I would surely have a top professional perform restoration to the above defects. However, please do not bid on this card unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored. Learn More about condition grades
