An Original 1963 Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Tsubaki Sanjuro (released in the U.S. in 1963 as "Akira Kurosawa's Sanjuro"), the 1962 Akira Kurosawa Japanese samurai martial arts action adventure thriller sequel ("A fast sword, keen perception used well to Slaughter His Enemies"; "Toho Production in TohoScope") starring Toshiro Mifune (in the title role as Sanjuro Tsubaki), Tatsuya Nakadai, Takashi Shimura, Reiko Dan, Keiju Kobayashi, Yuzo Kayama, and Akihiko Hirata. Note that this movie was a sort of sequel to Kurosawa's 1961 movie, "Yojimbo", with Mifune again playing a ronin, but with a different name (and again, he is a somewhat tarnished hero). Also note that this well regarded Akira Kurosawa Japanese movie surprisingly only received a limited first release in the U.S., and movie paper from that U.S. release is incredibly rare, for unknown reasons. It also apparently had a limited first release in all other English-speaking countries, again for unknown reasons.

Important Added Info: Note that when we auctioned this poster in 2018, it was the very first movie paper item we have ever auctioned from the U.S. release of this Akira Kurosawa movie (we were reconsigned that very same poster again in 2020, but it was still the only poster we had auctioned). Not only that, the only other English language item we have ever auctioned was a Japanese "export" poster, which might have been sent to any English speaking country. Why this incredible rarity? Perhaps this movie received a very limited arthouse release in English speaking countries, but whatever the reason, English language movie paper from it is incredibly rare! The first poster we were consigned was linenbacked, and now we have been consigned an unbacked example, just the second poster of any kind from this U.S. release that we have auctioned.

Condition: good to very good. The poster has pinholes around the edges (some are torn or enlarged due to rough removal at upper right) and it was folded in half an extra time resulting in a light vertical foldline at left and right. There are some tiny creases and tears along portions of the upper horizontal fold and there is some small paper loss and separation at the top crossfold. It has light wear in the other folds. It is otherwise in pretty nice condition and after a relatively simple linenbacking the very rare poster will display well!
