An Undated (probably 1945) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French Movie Poster (measures 23" x 31") (Learn More) La Grande Illusion (released in the U.S. in 1938 as "Grand Illusion"), the classic 1937 Jean Renoir French France Germany World War I (WWI) anti-war military prisoner of war (POW) melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; many people rightfully consider this movie to be one of the handful of absolute finest movies ever made!) starring Jean Gabin, Dita Parlo, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim, Julien Carette (billed as "Carette"), Gaston Modot (billed as "Modot"), Georges Peclet (billed as "Peclet"), Marcel Dalio (billed as "Dalio"), and Jean Daste (billed as "Daste"). Note that this is also the rare case of a great movie that was recognized as being truly great right after it was made. It was the first foreign film ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, and it certainly deserved to win! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Bernard Lancy Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "country of origin" poster for this French movie! Also note that most collectors prefer this classic Bernard Lancy poster design to that of the first French release, and examples of this poster have often sold for a higher price than that for a same sized poster from the original release. Also note that this poster is undated, but every major French dealer agrees that this poster was released in 1945. Finally note that this French poster measures 23" x 31" and is linenbacked. Condition: very good. The poster had there horizontal folds and one vertical fold. It had separation, tiny tears, and minute paper loss on some foldlines and pinholes in the corners and very minor border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, and the restorer chose to do next-to-no restoration along the folds, which is the "European" style of linenbacking, which is, of course, appropriate given that this is one of the most classic of European posters! Of course, any talented restorer could perform additional touch up to the slight fold wear, if the new owner of the poster so desired, without re-backing the poster. Learn More about condition grades
