An Original Vintage Movie Studio Promotional Item (measures 5 1/2" x 7" [14 x 18 cm]) (Learn More) First National Pictures was an American motion picture production and distribution company. It was founded in 1917 by Thomas L. Tally and J.D. Williams as a merger of 26 first-run cinemas in response to Paramount's market domination. First National partially merged with Warner Brothers in 1928, and then completely merged in 1936. First National has the distinction of making the first million-dollar contracts in the history of film, with Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin! AND Educational Pictures (also known as Educational Film Exchange) was an American film distribution company, founded in 1916 by Earle Hammons. Probably best known for his series of Buster Keaton comedies in the 1930s, Educational Pictures primarily distributed short subjects and one reel comedies (including the earliest screen appearances by Shirley Temple!). Educational Pictures went bankrupt in 1939, after failing to enter the feature-film market with already financially troubled Grand National Pictures. Important Added Info: Note that this is a REALLY interesting promotional item that was created in 1924 by First National Pictures and Educational Pictures. It was given away at movie theaters. It appears that they were so close to having the concept of "3-dimensional pictures", and yet it is not quite. It has a red and blue clear plastic mounted within the top of the item, with the notations "LEFT EYE" and "RIGHT EYE" below them. Under that are three images from First National Pictures on one side and three from Educational Pictures on the other. But they missed the 3-D concept, because they told you to tear off the portion with the plastic and then look at the pictures "first through RED glass, then through BLUE" and "use one eye only"! So you would see one image when you looked at the pictures with the red and a different image when you look at it with the blue. Had they thought about it just a little more, they might have realized that you could look through both at once, and if the images were printed correctly, they would appear to come off of the paper, which a decade later became a reality in some early 3-D movies, but it was not for over 30 more years before 3-D movies first caught on. We have never auctioned this very interesting novelty item before! Condition: very good. The item has some minor wear, but it seems amazing it both has survived and that it was never used!
