WAR OF THE WORLDS ('53) WAR OF THE WORLDS ('53) British quad OR search current auctions Auction History Result 7m0021 WAR OF THE WORLDS British quad 1953 H.G. Wells & George Pal classic, different & ultra rare! Date Sold 10/27/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded British Quad Movie Poster (BQ; Quad Crown; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, the classic 1953 Byron Haskin science fiction (sci-fi) Martian extraterrestrial alien invasion action thriller ("From the ends of the universe... they are reaching for YOU!"; produced by George Pal; loosely based on the classic novel by H.G. Wells; about seemingly unstoppable aliens invading the Earth) starring Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, Les Tremayne, Robert Cornthwaite, Lewis Martin, and Ann Codee NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: THIS FIRST RELEASE BRITISH QUAD FROM WAR OF THE WORLDS (which we have never auctioned before) IS LIKELY THE SINGLE MOST DESIRABLE (and incredibly rare) 1950s HORROR/SCI-FI POSTERS THERE IS! You surely know that almost every first release U.S. poster from this movie shows a large image of an alien hand. There is a style B half-sheet that shows alien warships that we have previously auctioned 4 examples of, and those have sold for between $21,000 and $17,000 (but we have seen reported sales of as high as $55,200). There is a 1965 re-release one-sheet that shows alien warships and we have previously auctioned 9 examples of that poster, and those have sold for between $4,600 and $3,000 (likely the highest priced 1960s re-release poster there is). But, as we said above, we have NEVER before auctioned this first release British Quad poster, which has a completely different and FAR more colorful image of an alien warship, and we have only ever seen one reported sale of this poster (for $38,400, a restored on linen example), and rumor has it this same poster will be returning to auction this year). But while that other example we know of is restored on linen, the example here is UNRESTORED, and it has truly minor fold and border wear, and the colors are extremely bright, indicating it was either barely or never displayed, while the previously sold example (at another auction) has telltale signs of having had its colors enhanced during linenbacking! The winning bidder of this wonderful poster will truly have one of the most desirable (if not the MOST desirable) 1950s horror/sci-fi posters there is (and it may well also be the most desirable 1950s movie posters period!). And they will have a fantastic great condition UNRESTORED example, so it is also very likely the best surviving example! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: very good. The poster was not folded in half an extra time, as many British quads are, so there are only three vertical folds and one horizontal fold. It has some creases along parts of the folds, but nothing serious, and they are not very noticeable or distracting. It has a small tear in the middle of the left blank border and a small tear each in the left and right of the top blank border. It has a few minor creases in the borders. It has the tiniest of paper loss at the left crossfold only, and none at the other crossfolds, as we said above, its colors are bright and fresh, indicating it was barely displayed. I hope the new owner of this ultra rare and desirable poster will display it so that as many people as possible can enjoy it! Learn More about condition grades
