Date Sold 8/4/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Unfolded Swiss Special Poster (measures 35 1/2" x 50 1/4" [90 x 128 cm]) (Learn More) General Dynamics Corporation (GD) is an American aerospace and defense corporation. As of 2019, it was the fifth-largest defense contractor in the United States, and the sixth-largest in the world, by sales. Formed in 1954 with the merger of submarine manufacturer Electric Boat and aircraft manufacturer Canadair, it evolved through multiple mergers and divestitures and changed markedly in the post-Cold War era of defense consolidation. Artist: Erik Nitsche Important Added Info: Note that we never auctioned this poster before (but we found an online record where an example from a museum sold at auction for $1,875). Also note that this poster was one of several designed by Erik Nitsche for General Dynamics. The first series was created for the 1955 First International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, and featured the tagline "Atoms For Peace" in various languages across the top of each poster. Further posters were created in 1956, and again in 1957 and 1958 for the Second International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy. This was the very first poster in the series. The pyramid constructed of flags of the world symbolizes all the nations together under the symbol of the atom. Sadly, the world has gone in just the opposite direction over the 69 years since this poster was created. One hopes that we can start using "atoms for peace" and not to threaten the end of the world! We previously auctioned four posters from this series (three different ones, with one auctioned two different times). The ones from 1955 sold for $802, $702, and $627, and the one from 1956 sold for $762. THIS poster (which, as we said, we have never auctioned before) has a much more striking image than those three! Finally, note that this poster was never folded and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has a series of creases down the left and right, with a few scattered in the image, and a tiny tear in the bottom border and a tiny pinhole in each corner. After a simple linenbacking, the poster will display wonderfully! Learn More about condition grades
