An Unfolded Two-Sided Museum Exhibition Poster (measures 11 1/2" x 16 1/2" [29 x 42 cm]) (Learn More) Jacques Gamelin was a French artist from the 1760s to the 1800s. He schooled at the Academie Royale de Toulouse, and after five years study, Gamelin won the Academie's first prize and he went to Paris to continue his studies. Later he became a painter to Pope Clement XIV, and eventually returned to the Academie as a teacher. This is where he undertook his great work, Nouveau Recueil D'osteologie et de Myologie (which translates to "New Compendium of Osteology and Myology"). The work is known for its display of both talent and imagination, with striking scenes of the Resurrection, the Crucifixion, and skeletons at play. Aside from the full-page copperplate illustrations by Gamelin, the work contains a number of intriguing vignettes on the title pages and elsewhere, which show battle scenes, visitations by death on unsuspecting revelers, and the anatomical artist's studio. His artwork is very distinctive and immediately recognizable. Jacques passed away in 1803 at the age of 65.
