An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 12" x 18 1/2" [30 x 47 cm]; 28 pages) (Learn More) Universal 1939-40, the 1939 campaign book featuring upcoming Universal movies and stars from movies that were planned for production by Universal in the coming year (and it also covered their top hits that had already been released in 1939). The campaign book is not only oversized (it measures 12" x 18 1/2" at its longest and widest), but it also has unusual die-cut tabs on the right of all pages, which would surely help explain why this campaign book is incredibly rare. This was a very good year for Universal, and to celebrate, they made this book with 2-page full-color spreads for each of their top releases, which included Destry Rides Again (Dietrich and Stewart), Black Friday (Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi), Charlie McCarthy, Detective, The Invisible Man Returns, Green Hell, My Little Chickadee (W.C. Fields and Mae West), and others! Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this campaign book is missing its covers. This affects the final 2-page spread, but all the other 2-page spreads are complete (we have pictured some of the best of them, including the great 2-page Black Friday spread, which has an image of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff that we have never seen before). Obviously, one would prefer to find an example of this campaign book with its covers, but we have never auctioned this campaign book before, and given its large size and die-cut pages, we are certain it is incredibly rare, and it might be many years before we auction another. Condition: fair. The covers are missing (see above). The wonderful 2-page full-color spreads have some varying amounts of wear around the edges. The Black Friday 2-page ad has some creases and scuffs in the left and right background areas by the stars' heads, and the final 2-page spread for The Boys from Syracuse (not pictured) has surface paper loss in the lower left and lower right.
