An Original Vintage German Film Program (measures 8 3/4" x 11 1/2" [22 x 29 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More) Der Weisse Damon (released in the U.S. as "Dope"), the 1932 Kurt Gerron German family relationship cocaine drug addiction romantic melodrama (about a German man who returns home from South America to discover that his sister is now a cocaine addict!; he spends the rest of the movie trying to get her away from the drug dealers and into rehabilitation) starring Hans Albers, Lucie Hoflich, Gerda Maurus, Trude von Molo, Alfred Abel, and Peter Lorre. Note that you may be surprised that the word "dope" was used as the English title for this drug movie in 1932, because you might not have thought drugs were called "dope" at that time. But actually, that usage goes all the way back to 1886! The word has a strange history. It was first used to mean a thick liquid, like a sauce or syrup, back at the start of the 1800s. In 1851, it was first noted as being used to designate a stupid person, and of course, in 1937, Walt Disney named one of his dwarfs "Dopey", and in World War II, a caricature foolish U.S. soldier was named "Joe Dope", and those usages cemented the idea of a slow person being a "dope". Apparently the drug use of the word comes from when early drug addicts created a liquid that they injected into their veins, and that liquid was called "dope", and it wasn't long before the users became "dope addicts". So in 1932, it was totally natural for this movie to be called "Dope" in the U.S. Sadly, we have never auctioned any movie paper with the title "Dope" (the only movie paper we have ever auctioned is a German program with the original German title). And of course, this movie features an early German appearance by Peter Lorre (and even though this was his sixth movie after his incredible performance in Fritz Lang's "M", he still was only third billed, and played "Hunchback"). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this program, which is a "country of origin" item for this German movie, is, as noted above, the only item we have auctioned from this movie. It has two large images of Peter Lorre on interior pages! Also note that we have provided an image of four of the pages of this 8-page program (we did this by opening it and laying it flat and photographing the front and back cover together, and two of the interior pages together). You can see the four of the 8 pages, and can well determine the exact condition of it from our super-sized image, but realize that there are 4 pages you are not seeing. But of course this means that the front cover appears in the top right of our image, but normally, the program would be folded down the center and you would view the cover by itself (and it will be sent folded as was originally intended). Condition: good to very good. Learn More about condition grades
