An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded English Three-Sheet Stage Play Poster (3sh; measures 39 1/2" x 85 3/4" [100 x 218 cm] ) (Learn More)

Hamlet, the circa 1890s English Shakespeare stage play starring Wilson Barrett (born as William Henry Barrett) and his company of English actors. The poster design is based on a photograph of Barrett taken by famous English photographers W & D Downey. The original picture is held at the National Portrait Gallery in London and in it William Barrett is not bearded as he is in the photograph nor is he dressed in his Hamlet costume so obviously some poetic license has been taken by the designer of the poster. Barrett and company toured the U.S. in 1886 and then again in 1894-1895.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this English three-sheet measures 39 1/2" x 77 1/2" [100 x 197 cm], but it has not been trimmed. Also note that this English three-sheet was printed in 3 sections, which were then mounted onto a thin linen and then folded up (see below).

UPDATED 04/04/2011: Note that a knowledgeable collector provided further information on Wilson Barrett and we have updated the description accordingly.

Condition: fair. The poster was mounted on a thin linen (commonly done 100 or more years ago, to preserve the posters as they were used and reused), and then it was folded several times. The poster is quite fragile and is separating at the folds and separating from the thin linen. In addition, someone painted over the lead actor's name at bottom (likely because they reused the poster when a different actor took the role), but you can still read his name through the paint. The poster is in urgent need of expert professional restoration. But the poster is mostly "all there", and after linenbacking by a talented professional, the poster will likely look fantastic.
