An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Desire, the 1936 Frank Borzage romantic jewel thief smuggling melodrama ("Together again for the first time since 'Morocco'"; "From a comedy by Hans Szekely and R.A. Stemmle"; about a beautiful jewel thief in Paris who steals a pearl necklace, and who hides them in the luggage of an American engineer going to Spain, and then she must retrieve them from him, and in doing so, she falls in love with him) starring Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, John Halliday, William Frawley, Ernest Cossart, Akim Tamiroff, Alan Mowbray, and Zeffie Tilbury (who had the part of her life at the end of her career, as Grandma in "The Grapes of Wrath") NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this lobby card, with a wonderful image of two legendary 1930s Hollywood stars, was used on the cover of the "Foyer Pleasure" book of classic lobby card reproductions, and that book surely created lots of new collectors! Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The card had tack holes and smudges in the borders, with a tack hole in the bottom center of the image and one near the middle of the left border art. It had some smudges around the edges that have entered some of the letters of Dietrich's credit. Overall, the card was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. The restorer did a nice job gelbacking the card, but they painted over much of the blank white borders, to "even them out", although it is not very noticeable at all. After the card was backed, it acquired a tiny tear in the upper right blank border. Still, this great card will display nicely on the new owner's wall! Learn More about condition grades
