A 1934 Re-Release 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" [7 x 11 cm] Vintage Photo (Learn More) All Quiet on the Western Front, the classic 1930 Lewis Milestone (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this movie) World War I (WWI) anti-war military melodrama ("At last... The motion picture!"; "Universal all talking picture"; from the equally classic novel by Erich Maria Remarque; the movie is from the point of view of German soldiers, and is rabidly anti-war, both of which made the movie very controversial!; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Lew Ayres (billed as "Lewis Ayres"), Louis Wolheim (who would have won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award had there been one in 1930!), John Wray, Arnold Lucy, Ben Alexander, Scott Kolk, Owen Davis Jr., Walter Rogers (billed as "Walter Brown Rogers"), William Bakewell, Russell Gleason, Richard Alexander, Harold Goodwin, Slim Summerville, G. Pat Collins, Beryl Mercer, Yola d'Avril (as the French girl Ayres romances by giving her food), and Raymond Griffith. Note that Zasu Pitts was set to appear in the film, but in early screenings, audience members laughed due to her comedienne status, so she was replaced with Beryl Mercer who later appeared in The Public Enemy! Also note that the one-sheet for this classic movie showed a battle-scarred soldier close up. Many people incorrectly assumed that it is Lew Ayres, the star of the movie. It was actually Walter Browne Rogers, and he was chosen as a "haunted unknown soldier", and in the movie his character is killed early on (and we have seen an article that quotes Lew Ayres as saying that he hoped Rogers would get a break out of this, but Rogers made no more movies after this!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this classic anti-war movie received a major re-release in 1934, and this theater went all out in creating an amazing display in front of the theater when they showed it for a second time in 1934. They had a giant standee on the street in front of their theater, which had the "book cover" from the one-sheet, with soldiers emerging from the book! On either side of the standee are actual sand bags, piled up to recreate the idea of a foxhole from World War I. They also put a giant banner under the marquee of their theater that reads "WAR! DECLARED AGAINST WAR! SEE ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT". There is a six-sheet in a six-sheet frame above the theater, and we certainly wish we could see that more clearly, because we can't imagine any of those exist. Finally, note that this re-release movie got much superior billing to the 1934 Norma Shearer movie "Riptide", which was also playing, and there is a one-sheet from that on display in the lower right of our image. Note that in October of 2017, we auctioned a wonderful collection of 27 photos (most measured 3.5x5.25, but some measured slightly smaller) that were taken by a man who worked at a large movie theater in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He created wonderful theater fronts and homemade posters (some that were displayed outside the theater and some inside the theater), and after he finished making his displays, he would take a picture of each and then he put them in a scrapbook. Collectors rightfully bid aggressively on these photos, and all but 4 auctioned for more than $20 each, and 7 sold for $100 or more, with two selling for over $300 each! Now we are offering another 27 photos from this amazing scrapbook! We auctioned many of the best titles in the first group, but there are a number of equally interesting titles in this group. After this, there will be just a few more theater front photos left to auction from the scrapbook, so for the most part, this is the last chance to acquire these very rare to find photos of original theater fronts and local theater displays from this time period. Each of the 27 photos is in a separate auction with this paragraph on them. Condition: good to very good. There are smudges and some stains in the blank borders. The photo was stapled and glued to an album page, and there are staple holes in the corners and glue stains on the back, but they do not affect the front (see our images).
